As an author, editor, and proofreader working in educational publishing, I rely on trustworthy reference works every day. Whether I’m drafting a new textbook, creating EFL materials, or polishing a manuscript for a publisher, good tools are essential. Here are the standbys I reach for most often.

Author and editor’s desk with open reference book and laptop.
Reference works and digital tools side by side: essentials for my work as a textbook author.

Dictionaries

  • Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary My first stop for definitions, examples, and idiomatic usage. It’s invaluable when creating EFL/ESL materials.

  • Oxford Collocations Dictionary Essential for language-learning resources. Learners need to see which words naturally go together, and I use it frequently as a textbook author.

  • Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary Clear and accessible, great for explaining language in a way that works for learners.

Grammar and Usage

  • Practical English Usage (Michael Swan) My standard reference for tricky grammar points, as well as vocabulary, idioms, and style. This book nearly always has the answer, explained clearly and with excellent examples.

Style and Spelling

  • Hart’s Rules A classic for copyediting and proofreading, with clear guidelines on punctuation, typography, and references.

  • New Oxford Spelling Dictionary Compact but reliable—handy for keeping British spelling consistent and for looking up where to divide words at the end of lines.

Digital Tools

  • Google Translate: Useful for quick drafts, but never without double-checking.

  • DeepL: Produces more idiomatic translations—excellent for first versions.

  • dict.cc: Great for everyday words, especially when I need subject-specific vocabulary and a variety of suggestions for different contexts.

Conclusion

I couldn’t do my work as an author, editor, and proofreader without these reference works. They help me deliver quality and consistency in all of my products.
